The .swiss Domain will soon open for natural Persons

Until now, .swiss domain names have been primarily reserved for companies listed in the Swiss commercial register since their introduction in 2015. However, as of April 24, 2024, this exclusivity will change. Private individuals and sole proprietorships, even those not formally registered in the commercial register, will now have the opportunity to register .swiss domains.

The advantages of a .swiss Domain according to the website:

.swiss creates added value for its holders, because it

• unmistakably indicates the origin and the base of Swiss businesses and organisations;
• underlines identification with the Swiss brand and its values;
• gives the web presence of Swiss organisations the exclusivity they deserve;
• raises the profile of Swiss brands far beyond the national frontiers. If it is Swiss on the inside, it should say .swiss on the outside.

Who can apply to register a .swiss domain name?

The following will be eligible for the assignment of a domain name:

• Swiss public bodies or other public law organisations (Confederation, cantons, municipalities);
• bodies registered with the Swiss commercial register having their headquarters and an actual administrative site in Switzerland (companies, associations, foundations, persons registered with the Swiss commercial register);
• associations and foundations not registered with the Swiss commercial register having their headquarters and an actual
• administrative site in Switzerland;

from 24 April 2024 14:00 CEST, natural persons domiciled in Switzerland and Swiss nationals.

Branches of foreign companies are not eligible.

Price

I’ve checked the Price for the .swiss Domain at Hostpoint

In general, domains cost less than 40 CHF per year. A .ch Domain for Example costs 15 CHF - 5 CHF for the first year. As from this Aspect the .swiss relatively expensive and has more conditions for the registration.

Summary

Only time will tell, if .swiss Domains for natrual Persons will be a thing. It’s clear that Providers will do advertising as they have a business there.
